Located on the banks of the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of the most creative and defiant music in American history. Under the spiritual influence of the "Singing River" as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals is some of the most important and resonant of all time. "I'll Take You There", "Brown Sugar", "When a Man Loves a Woman", "I Never Loved a Man the Way That I Loved You", "Mustang Sally", "Tell Mama", "Kodachrome", and "Freebird" are just a few of the tens of thousands of tracks created there. At it's heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, he brought black and white musicians together to create music that would last for generations while also giving birth to the unique 'Muscle Shoals sound' and the rhythm section 'The Scampers'. in this movie legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Greg Allman, Bono, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Cliff, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Wilson Pickett, Keith Richards, Percy.

マッスルショールズには、2回訪れました。
フェームスタジオは、中も見学させてもらったり、サウンドスタジオは外からしか見れませんでしたけど、川沿いのニューサウンドスタジオは、やはり見学しました。
夢のような旅でしたが、この映画には、他の音楽映画にはない、情緒が感じられ、見ていると旅愁が蘇ってきました。
このサントラ曲、選曲も最高ですね。

「バックコーラスの歌姫たち」の感激も冷めやらぬ同じ年に、またしてもこのような
上質な音楽ドキュメンタリー映画が観られるとは！何という幸せ！

ＣＤとしてのセットリスト（楽曲一覧）は他の方がレビューに投稿されていますので、
省略しますが、このＣＤは楽曲で選ぶというよりも、映画を観て「フェイムスタジオ」
や「マッスル・ショールズ・サウンド・スタジオ」の成り立ちや「何が他のスタジオ
と違う（当時、違った）のか？」を確認してこそ、このラインナップに鳥肌が立つの
ではないかと思います。

名もない地方の小さなスタジオと都会の大手レコード会社との関係や確執、スタジオ
に所属する（していた）ミュージシャンの存在など、ボクには「目からウロコ」な話
ばかりでした。

もちろん、素晴らしい曲ばかりですから、是非是非聴いてほしいです。同時に是非映画
も観てほしいです。このＣＤの臨場感がグッと増すはずです。

マッスルショールズを知るにはうってつけのナンバーがズラリ。
しかしながら、映画の全容を反映するには、どうしてもディスクが一枚では物足りない。
二枚組であって欲しかった。もしくはパート２、３があってもいいと思う。
そうすればマニア的には、パート２、３のみ買いたい人も出てきそう。

Here is a great salute to those individuals who don't get the headlines, but who hold the soul of the music industry in their hands. Like a lot of people, I thought the musicians on the records were playing their own instruments. I didn't know that the backbone of Muscle Shoals was a handful of people who went largely unnamed, but nonetheless made some good singers into great singers, and great singers into legends. Like the Funk Brothers in Detroit - those wonderful musicians who were the glue of the Motown sound (see the wonderful movie, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown") the background singers (see "20 Feet from Stardom"), and the Wrecking Crew in Los Angeles who were the real music behind The Beach Boys, The Byrds, and dozens of other groups, (a movie about this group of studio musicians is coming out once they get all the legal nonsense out of the way), Muscle Shoals fills in a gap in American music history that needed to be included. Here is a shout out to all those studio musicians who held it all together. After all, if you ever listen to the original James Bond theme, you're listening to a young studio musician named James Page on the guitar.

Caught the movie on bbc4 one night and the music involved was amazing. Tracked the cd down and was certainly not disappointed. This wee bolt hole in Alabama has produced some of the finest records of all time and this album catches only a small percentage of the best. From Paul Simon to Alicia keys via Lynard Skynard this should be a purchase for anyone who either detests what Cowell and co has done to the music industry or has tired the dying state it lies in. Who would have thought that some of the most recognisable sounds of african american soul music had a group of white nerds playing the backing tunes......and rocking it. During a time of stupidity, racism and segregation great musicians got into a studio ignored the skin colour, creed, race and politics and funked. This is sheer brilliance and includes a fantastic Beatles cover by Wilson Pickett during a jamming session with an Allman brother. In addition you should also get hold of the DVD movie that tells the story of this Mecca for music. FIVE STARS!!!!
